Department of Radiation Oncology Sichuan Cancer Hospital & Institute
1.Overview
The department was founded in 1983 initiated by Prof. Wang Jingbo、Xi Ning & Wu Dake with high reputations in China, and started to treat patients on May, 1987, with the guidance of Prof. He Yirong. With the help of famous oncologists Yu Zihao, Yin weibo & Xu guozheng from the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences Cancer Institute & Hospital, the primary expert team led by Prof. Lang Jinyi has been composed with the mission of cancer diagnosis and treatnemt in 1990. In 2003, the Dept. was nominated a key medical center of the Sichuan Province, and it was the only oncology radiotherapy center awarded with a class A appellation in Sichuan. In 2013, Prof. Lang became the chairman of Chinese Society for Radiation Oncology (CSTRO). In 2014, the department was built as a national key clinical Department of Oncology.
Since its inception, the department has maintained its position as a provincial leader in providing expert, compassionate, prompt cancer care, high quality teaching and research. Treating more than 5,000 patients a year, the department is one of the largest radiotherapy centers in China.
Prof. Lang Jinyi serves as the Chairman and academic leader, and Prof. Li Tao, Wang Weidong, Wang Pei and Zhang shichuan are the deputy directors of the Department.

2.Equipments and facilities
This department is equipped with world-class advanced hardware and software for radiotherapy, which can meet different needs for patients with various social and economical backgrounds, providing the state-of-art treatment for patients.

3.Experts team
Professor Lang Jinyi has been entitled with “the national middle-aged expert with outstanding contributions”, “Ministry of Health Oncology academic and technological leaders (first batch)”, “provincial academic and technological leaders “and “the State Council allowance medical experts”, “health consultation center experts”, “Sichuan outstanding scientific and technological workers”.

The department has made remarkable achievements in the cultivation of high talent experts, there are currently 4 returned Ph.Ds., 14 doctoral and postdoctoral, 33 employees with a Master degree, more than 15 employee were sent abroad in recent years for further study more than six months. 2 professors have been titled as provincial government academic and technological leaders (Second class professor), two government allowances of experts of the State Council, two provincial outstanding contribution experts, two provincial health department academic leaders, one provincial health department candidates for a scholarship.
4. Clinical Priorities and advantages
4.1.Sub-discipline construction
The department is divided into three sub-disciplines, including the division of head and neck which treats patients with nasopharyngeal, oropharyngeal cancer, hypopharyngeal cancer, nasal cancer, oral cancer, laryngeal cancer, etc; the division of thorax for patients with lung, esophagus,breast and chest wall, mediastinal tumors, etc; The division of pelvis and abdomen for patients with colorectal cancer, stomach cancer, prostate cancer, cervical cancer. After the implementation of specialist groups, for different tumor types, the establishment of a comprehensive and detailed diagnosis and treatment of individual processes and radiation norms, improve the professionalism and effectiveness of diagnosis and treatment, and promote various specialist clinical platforms for carrying out the clinical trials. Currently, more than 10 clinical trials are undergoing in the center.
4.2.Multidisciplinary treatment (MDT)
On the basis of the implementation of specialist grouped by disease, the center actively participate and promote the building of tumor multimodality therapy Cooperative Group, in order to improve and follow different cancer diagnostic and treatment practices, based on multi-disciplinary learning system, consultation system, discussion system and resource sharing system, to carry out clinical and basic cancer research, provide individualized treatment for each patient to ensure efficacy. Currently, nasopharyngeal cancer, lung cancer, esophageal cancer, breast cancer, gynecological cancer and other MDT have been running.
4.3.Technical priorities
The center pays attention to the construction of the Centre radiotherapy technology priorities in recent years, under the precise medical guidance, to further regulate the principles of cancer treatment, with the leading of professor Lang Jinyi, adaptive radiotherapy(ART)for nasopharyngeal carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck, SBRT treatment for lung cancer and liver cancer, IMRT compensated 3D-brachytherapy for cervical cancer etc, the treatment outcomes have reached or exceeded the international advanced level.
5.Training and scientific research
5.1.Scientific research achievements
In the past five years, the department has published nearly 200 papers, including more than 50 Science cited index listed journals, more than 10 outstanding papers. An annual contribution of about 5-10 abstracts at the ASTRO annual meetings as a Poster, and 1-2 oral presentation yearly. More than 50 scientific projects supported by various foundations are undergoing, including National Natural Science Foundation of China, Ministry of Science and major projects, major research and development programs, as well as provincial projects. More than 30 patents, nearly 20 scientific awards have been achieved in the past five years.
5.2.Teaching and Professional Training
The department has been named as the national radiotherapy specialist training base since 2013. As associate editor of the first China radiotherapy specialist training textbook, we joined the national specialist training team. From 2016, it developed into a comprehensive cancer center affiliated to University of Electronic Science and Technology of China(UESTC), which builds a complete training system from undergraduate student to doctoral candidates, also including the clinical oncology professional training of undergraduate, Masters and doctoral students from Guangxi Medical University, Southwest Medical University, North Sichuan Medical College and Chengdu Medical College.
6.Out-looking
With the coming of new era of Internet, life genomics and big data, the department will uphold the "patient-centered" as basic principles, to develop precise diagnosis and treatment technology, aim to allow each patient to get most effective individual treatment at lowest cost, make our endeavor to turn the department into a leading domestic and international first-class radiotherapy center!
